Puppies 3-6 weeks

Dog average life span.

The puppies can already hear, see and smell like an adult dog does when they are five weeks old, even though they can focus their attention for very short periods only. The weaning is normally initiated in the third week more or less because this is the moment in which the milky secretion begins to decrease and the mother begins to progressively reject the puppies that try breastfeeding.

The weaning is prolonged to approximately the fifth or sixth week and constitutes the first and most important lesson for the puppies since it teaches them to deal with the frustration that represents being rejected by their mother when they feel they need their mother the most. They also learn a lot when playing with their brothers and their own mother because this helps them acquire the conscious that they are dogs. Many of the postures and facial gestures used during the games are acquired in this period.
