Nursing During the First Months
As long as the mother feeds them as if we do it directly, the dogs should be nurtured with milk during the first month and half; in all ways, starting from when they complete the month, we can begin the period in that we administered some chopped meat and boiled rice, in a small ration, simply so that they start getting used to take other foods. If the puppy is fed by the mother, when we make this operation we will have to separate the mother from the puppy for several reasons: she will probably eat up the entirety of chopped meat dedicated to the small puppies and if they spent all day nursing, most likely they wont eat anything else apart form the maternal milk, for that reason, if we separated the mother from the puppy a couple of hours before, when they get hungry, they will eat eagerly the food we give them and they will go this way getting ready for the day they stop nursing.
Let us put special attention in preparing the food of the small puppies, never give them the food in the same recipients of the other animals, as well as their distribution in different dining rooms; let us try to avoid this from the beginning any class of infection that can be caused this way; let us also avoid that the puppies are visited by other dogs, being the mother the only one that should have access to the puppies. For this same reason, the mother should not be in contact with any other dogs that are not from the house and it will be better than neither with those that cohabit with us. We will keep a hygiene and an isolation with the rest of the animals that cohabit in our house, we will wash our hands every time that we enter in the place where the small puppies are, keeping in mind to always do it, even in case we don't have intention of touching them. Let us also avoid all kinds of unnecessary visits, we cannot ignore that they may have a sick animal in their house that may be contagious, let us remember that when the puppies are born they are immunized by the own mother, for the first three weeks and it is very difficult that can contract some illness; in all ways, the inopportune visits during that period can have brought germs that last in the atmosphere during several weeks, for that reason when they have just been born it is not advisable the presence of strange in our house.
