Having a dog

Responsibilities of getting / owning / buying a Dog

Turning into a dog owner is not an easy decision. It is convenient to really take into consideration the pros and cons before going on and buying a dog.

In the first place, you have to take into consideration that introducing a new member to the family implies a serious commitment. You will have to invest time and money, make great efforts and face frustration sometimes. On the other hand, you will fill your house with joy, fun and tenderness and company and loyalty are guaranteed. But not all of a sudden.

When you buy yourself a new car, you normally take a lot more precautions than when you acquire a new dog. The future dog owners don't need to get a license or pass any kind of test. You don't get a dog with instructions manual and there is no guarantee that things will go fine. When you buy a car, you carefully choose the model that better fits your lifestyle, personal needs and budget. And you know, more or less, before buying it, how much the maintenance, the possible repairs and the insurance will cost you. dog sweaters

All these things should also be taken into consideration before getting a dog. That breed you are thinking about... would it be the most appropriate for you house, your lifestyle and your financial situation? Would it be more likable to suffer more from certain diseases than the other breeds? The maintenance cost (in terms of time or money) is very high in some breeds and types (the very long hair of the Afghan Hound or the Lhasa Apso for example, force you to spend a lot of time to the daily grooming if you want your dog to look good). Other dogs turn to be expensive in the long term: big dogs need to eat a lot and with some breeds you will need to get a very expensive insurance. On the other hand, some dogs need to have more physical exercises than the others. designer dog collars

RESPONSIBILITIES of dog ownership.

Dogs are a great company, it is true, but they also need you on the other side. They also need appropriate food and veterinarian care, no matter what your financial situation may be and/or how many other expenses you have to cover in a month. You will have to take your dog for exercising sessions, provide mental stimulus to them and maybe groom them everyday, either if the weather is good or bad or either if your appointment book if full or not everyday. Our responsibilities with the dog are simply mandatory, even when they may seem routinely and boring.

If you have a very hectic life and it is going to be very difficult for you to make some place in your appointment book for your dog, you should maybe consider getting another pet. Dogs should be allowed to behave like dogs Are you ready to accept them as they are? They sometimes roll in your garbage to get its smell, they leave the carpet and the clothes full of hair, chew shoes, dig in the garden, etc.

Finally, the most important thing: Are you ready to dedicate your dog a good part of your free time?  Because you will have to train it if you want it to adapt itself to your lifestyle. Besides that, you should play enough with your dog if you want it to be happy, well educated and sociable. A dog that doesn't play enough can develop conduct problems. For many dog owners, fulfilling these obligations is a real pleasure; however, there are people that think that this is too much to ask.

QUESTIONNAIRE: BEFORE DECIDING on buying a DOG, ASK YOURSELF...

If you have already decided to buy a dog, but you are not sure about what breed or type of dog is the most appropriate in your case, answer these questions:

  • How long can you dedicate everyday to train your dog, take it for a walk and keep it clean?
  • Do you travel often?
  • How much space do you have at home?
  • Is you garden's fence safe?
  • Are you a very active person? What about your family?
  • How much physical exercise can you provide your dog, in terms of time and distance?
  • How much money do you count on in order to get a dog and take care of it?
  • Do your children and their friends like dogs? Are they willing to share the responsibilities? Would they cope with the loss of the dog?
  • How important is it for you to have a very neat house?
  • Are you very fond of your garden?
  • Do you suffer from any kind of allergy?
