For almost all dogs, walking is an exciting hunting journey. The images, sounds and smells of the street awake the dog's senses and make then desire to explore the environment, smell possible preys make a social life or simply let off steam. For company dogs the walk can be the main course of the day, a desired moment to squeeze up the last drop, without letting any party pooper, even when it is the owner himself, to ruin it for the dog.

There is where many owner's problem begin; even when their dogs are quiet and obedient at home, they seem to transform when going out, being almost uncontrollable. They lay their truffle on the floor, get totally disconnected from their owners and go completely deaf, for the things they are not interested in. The solution consists in turning ourselves in something more interesting the squirrels, the other dogs and all those great smells spread on the grass. It may seem impossible to compete with such stimulus, but the truth is that taking advantage of the walks to play with our dogs improves a lot our relation and allow us to control them more and more every time.

Many dog toys are especially adequate for the park. A ball attached to a rope is great to throw and ask the dog to bring it back and even to make the dog search it using its sense of smell. The attached rope will let us take it back from the dog at any moment and there are dog owners that say it is a lot easier to recover this kind then any of the regular ones. If you let your dog to play with this ball only during its walk at the park, it will never get used to it (bored) or loose interest in it, but you have to make sure your dog will never play with the ball at home and that it is big enough for the dog not to swallow it.

It is very important to take dog treats that will really enchant your dog during its walk at the park because we never know when it will surprise us with an admirable conduct (as coming back very fast when you call it or lay obediently and remain like that until it receives a new command) and you will regret not having any treat at hand. When the dogs are learning to come back when they are called, it is important to call frequently and reward them in some kind of a random way; sometimes with treats, others with games or some others just with congratulations. Dogs use their truffle to explore the floor searching for smelly objects. Humans can not even imagine the quantity of information a dog is able to get from the smells. The smell of the urine and the defecation the dogs find on the street give them information about the gender, the hormonal situation and even the health state of the male or female dogs that urinated or defecated there. The fragrance trace left by other animals tells the dogs how long ago each of them has passed through that point and what kind of animals they were.

You can take advantage of your dog's extraordinary sense of smell to turn into the leader and not a simple participant in the hunting journeys during the walk. A good start point is to choose a toy your dog will really like and drop it in the garden's grass right before letting the animal out and invite it to look for the toy. Once the dog finds it, looked surprised and happy for your dog's feat.

When your have good commands of this game, you can make it more difficult by turning it into a basic tracking exercise; hide it some time before in some point you are going by during the walk. It is a wonderful experience to see your dog guiding itself using only its sense of smell to find objects.

BE CLEAN There is something that allows people to distinguish a dog owner that is responsible when he takes his dog for walks from other that is not just by watching them. It is totally inadmissible to leave certain souvenirs all over the city.
