Dog Rickets
Very often a vagabond dog that didn't have a good master or didn't have one can suffer of rickets. Then the dog will have bent paws, arched back, and thick articulations. Rickets almost always takes place for lack of vitamins D that fixes the calcium in the tissue and it is characterized by the lack of calcification, the softening and the deformation of the bones. It is caused by lack of calcium, phosphorous and mineral salts in the alimentation, by the bad hygienic conditions, the lack of sun and of exercise. Rickets are noticed when it is in an advanced stage but it is possible to fight it, specially if the dog is young. If we give to the dog big doses of calcium and phosphorus, besides rich nourishment, the rickets can diminish.
The vitamins are decisive for the development and the health of the dog. Very often, the only vitamins that a vagabond dog absorbs are those that he finds in the peal of an apple or an egg yolk that is in a garbage can. Therefore when he becomes part of the family, it will be necessary to provide him grated raw carrots, supreme of orange, grapes, tomatoes and apple shells and it will be necessary to avoid really cooked foods, since the vitamin diminishes the wealth of the foods.
If the dog only eats meat it will be necessary to add to his portions minerals salts that contain calcium, phosphorous, manganese, iron, zinc, iodine and magnesium. All this will be indicated by the veterinarian that checks the dog.
