Dog FLEAS Fighting them

Dog Fleas Fighting them

Fleas are the most frequent external parasite in Western Europe dogs. They're normally brown in color, with a narrowed body and a big belly. Their paws are very strong and aloud them to cross very considerable distances. They grow in humid and warm environments, as the majority of the modern homes. As this parasite can also affect people, the fight against the fleas has generated all kinds of inhibitors and insecticides.

Flea's Living Cycle

  • The adult ones live on their host's skin and get fed by sucking his blood, they get matted and die. The female fleas deposit around 200 eggs during their two weeks of life as adult insects.
  • These eggs fall on the floor where they burst. The flea's larva drag themselves to the most inaccessible areas of the rug or the dog's bedclothes and gets fed from the dog's dead cells and the adult flea's excrement that contain the undigested remains of dry blood.
  • About two weeks later, the larva turn into chrysalides inside of a protecting cocoon in which they can stay from months and even years, in a latent status, if nothing disturbs their sleep.
  • The chrysalides turn into imperfect fleas if they feel vibrations and carbon dioxide, both indicators that a host is getting close. After the metamorphosis, they can survive for up to two weeks, waiting for the host to cross by once again.

Inhibitors and Insecticides

  • You have to sprinkle the most frequented part of your house by your dog with substances that kill the eggs, larva and imperfect fleas, even when they may not kill the chrysalides (or adult fleas because they always live on the host). Some products that are directly applied on the dog also help on the disinfection of the environment because they contain the dead cells the larva eat and poison them.
  • You can provide the dog with oral inhibitors once a month. These are absorbed by the adult fleas through the blood and will keep their chrysalides from turning into imperfect fleas (young fleas).
  • The insecticide formulas or products aimed to exterminate the adult fleas that already live on the dog may vary a lot among each other. The classic flea killers have been widely beaten by the new products that can be acquired on the veterinary clinics. The preparations for topic use, drops that are applied on the nape once a month, are very popular and are putting the classic sprays aside.  Flea Medicine
