Dog CONTEST PHASES

All of the contestants of each category get into the plate at the same time. Their owners or trainer must have a very visible identification number. In the first place, they should ask the dog to stand up or stay in a determined position according to its breed, and stay still while the judges make a visual examination.

After that, each dog has to be individually explored. The judge will examine its mouth to evaluate the bite and will careful touch its body to judge its muscular and skeleton complexion. When the exploration is over, the owner or trainer will be asked to order the dog to evolve through the plate. As a tradition, the dogs should draw a triangle: they have to get away first, trotting and on a parallel line from the trainer. Then, they go cross the plate laterally and finally, they should go back to the start line. The purpose of this triangle figure is to allow the judges to examine the dog's movements from all points of view: back, front and lateral.

THE JURY DECISION The jury is usually formed of experts on the contesting breed(s) and, at the same time, they have participated and won many beauty contests in the past. The evaluation criteria are always the official standard of the breed, it means, they will reward the dog that most precisely fits with the standard. It consists on a description of the prototype or ideal of each breed, established by its correspondent Kennel Club. In all countries in which these types of contests are celebrated, it is possible to ask for a copy of the standard to the respective Kennel Club.  If you wish to present you dog to the contest, begin by obtaining and studying the standard of the breed because it is the only objective reference point you can count on.  Otherwise, calibrating the real possibilities of your dog would be too difficult, because the most natural thing, as an owner or breeder, is to be blind by the pride as you see your dog absolutely perfect.
