Company DOGS - Companionship Dogs
This group includes many different breeds among each other, but they are difficult to classify into any other group. Their aspect and geographical origin vary a lot and their size can be as little as the Tibetan Spaniel or as big as the gigantic Leonberger. In general, all companion dogs are really comfortable in the domestic environment, even when not all breeds are appropriate for any type of house.
There are people who prefer to call them "non sporty dogs" or "special dogs" because many of them were created to develop many different tasks, except hunting, fighting and other typical work dogs (as for example, warming imperial beds, entertaining in the palace salon or being the lady's pet). The ones that were not created as luxury or salon dogs used to develop already inexistent tasks and as they can no longer be considered working dogs, they are now part of this heterogeneous group (the Bulldog for example, was a combat dog used to fight with bull to the death when that cruel show was still legal and it is currently a company dog). There is an even criterion when classifying a breed into this group. The Japanese Akita, for example, was considered a company dog in the United Kingdom, but it is classified as a working dog in the United States. Some of the most ancient, beautiful dog breeds, intelligent and preferred as pets all over the world, are included into this group. The pedigree of many of them comes from a past time and the origin of not few of these breeds is related to an exotic and fascinating history. The Lhasa Apto for example, always lived in the Tibetan temples, because it was believed that the lamas that were not able to reach nirvana always reincarnated in a dog of this breed. The vigorous Dalmatian, on the other hand, used to run along with the shooting horses, like exscolting the carriages and their load.
The Chow Chow originated thousands of years ago and it was the hunting dog for the nobility in the Imperial China. The Akita Inu originally bred in Japan as a combat dog and to knock down big and ferocious animals as the bear for example, was declared national patrimony on its country of origin. dog leashes
All of these breeds are very popular as pets nowadays and are frequent participants in canine beauty contests and expositions. One of the most common ones is the Poodle, descendent of the German water retrievers. The Bulldog is also very popular, liberated since a very long time from the cruel show for which it was created and turned into an English national symbol.
The so-called Tibetan terrier is not really a Terrier but a shepherd dog. However, it can not be classified as a working dog because it has been adapted to the company dog's functions and it lacks of the vigor and the corpulence of the rest of the shepherd and working dogs in general.
The Tibetan spaniel is not included among the show, water and retriever dogs as the other Spaniels either. Related to the Pekingese its work consisted on patiently wait hours and hours under a monk's tunic, turned into some kind of a living electrical blanket.
This group has recently increased at great speeds, due to the new crosses among breeds, some of the already so popular than in the British islands for example, they already have a name and it is believed that they will soon be recognized as independent breeds by the Kennel Club, the Cockerpoolled, in concrete, a cross between the Poodle and the Pekingese. The Dutch Kennel Club has already officially recognized the Markiesje, a new breed that comes from a cross the Toy Poodles and a non-British Epagneul or Spaniel. Other very popular cross in the United Kingdom is the Labradoodle, a mixture of the Labrador and the Standard Poodle. Dog Collars
Finally, the dogs included in this group, besides being all company dogs and feel much attached to their owners as a general rule, are not always an appropriate pet for everyone. The Akita for example, is a very independent breed, totally inadequate for an inexperienced owner. As for the hygienic and esthetic cares and need of physical exercise, the whole diversity of breeds doesn't stop us from giving you general tips.
