Avoiding reproduction of stray dogs
Why so many dogs are born without home? One could affirm that, as the nature it has located the dog beside the man, the blame of so many useless births is due to the human negligence, to the excessive freedom of wandering by the streets that it is granted to the dogs, to the ignorance on the development of the zeal in the female. It will be good, then, to remember some general rules so that somebody, after reading them, can avoid, with some attention and surveillance, the coming to the world of more unhappy dogs.
The females usually have two periods of zeal every year. The first zeal happens around the eight or nine months of age, but it can delay more according to the climate, the size, the feeding and the time of the year in that the birth took place. The beginning of zeal is noticed by the swell of the vulva and some small drops of blood. The average duration of the period of zeal is of fifteen days; during the first week during the lost of blood the dog is not fertile. During the second week, on the other hand, the female will accept the male's company. From that moment and during about eight or nine days, she will be able to get pregnant, because the ovulation has begun.
Therefore who doesn't want to have puppies maintain isolated the dog in zeal and only take it out for a brief hygienic walk, always maintaining it subject with the chain. A protective belt of plastic can also be put that it is stuffed with absorbent cotton wool and it is placed with easiness. This belt is sold in the stores for dogs and it is made in several sizes.
